I have made my peace with Stanly Kubrick

Not too long ago i thought Kubrick was a terrible director. I thought that he was a fake who stole all his ideas from books, and i thought all his films were totaly meaningless and idiotic. Eyes Wide Shut made me hate hi, and pretty much all his movies bored me out of my mind and I just didn't understand why he was a director.

Even though i didn't like him i decided to rent Full Metal Jacket a couple of days ago.

Now lately I've been thinking about myself as a film maker and I've been thinking a lot about how i want my movies to look like and the style and the editing and cinematography. For weeks I've been experimenting with looks and styles in my head, trying to analyze what my legacy will be.

I was thinking about this right before i put the Full Metal Jacket dvd into my player. In the first 10 minutes i realized something. And this is what i realised: The director who my vision is most like is Stanly Kubrick.

I FINALY know what was inside his mind when he made his films. I couldn't believe howsimilar his films were to the thoughts i had inside my head about my own future films. I could finally understand.

So, as of now, I am happy to announce that i have made my peace with Mr. Kubrick. I know it's a little late. May he rest in peace. I finally see the genious which i could not see before.

By the way, i should explain:

I wasn't trying to FIND a specific LOOK or STYLE that i WANTED to make mine. I already KNEW what my films would be like. I already knew who i was and how I'd make my films, and i was thinking about that.

So when i saw Full Metal Jacket, it triggered me to think of his other movies. And i thought of EYES WIDE SHUT, and i thought about it for a while. And it hit me. I finally got what the man was trying to do.

Some things you can't put in words, you just know.

You have to realize that most director's don't really come up with a look or style. Their DP's do. The fact is that most director's just say 'I want it too look like this...' then the studio finds them a DP who specializes in that look, OR the director says 'I liked the look of 'insert film title here' can we get that DP?' and then the producer goes out and gets him. There are quite a few directors who try and direct the visuals of their films.. namely Kubrick to some extent, Scorsese, Speilberg.. but for the most part a Director just looks after his/her actors.

Kubrick is probably one of the very few directors to have mastered just about every aspect of the filmmaking process.If anyone truly deserves the title of ?auteur? it's most certainly him.

As someone has already pionted out, Kubrick would have been qualified to work as DofP for any film. That's why he fell out with one on the set of the Killing or Paths of Glory (I can't quite remember) becuase he new what he wanted and had already set it up when the DofP changed it.
In fact I learned from the extra features on The Spy who Loved Me that he was called in to help light the inside of the tanker set because no one else could do it. He also asked that nobady be told about his involvment.

Kubrick was a DP before his career changed to become a director. You know he's a good director when he holds the world records for most takes of a shot and longest shoot (my sources are from Guiness Book of World Records 2001).

I really don't give opinions, just facts.

Anyways, I was wrong about Kubrick not deciding is visual style for his films. I was just taking into consideration that the majority of directors don't have much to do with the looks of their films. Especially in these days. He was a photograper, which of course lends itself entirely to being a DP. Plus, after some research I discovered that most of his DP's where also the cameramen, and had little-to-no experience with lighting. Sorry.

For most feature films I believe the shooting ratio is 20:1 while Kubrick?s on the other hand wouldgo as high as 300:1 lol!

Actualy, on any major film or TV show, Filmstock is the least concern for them-It's the TIME that matters.

A while back.I saw them shooting a fairly big TV show in LA and noticed that on one scene they had four 35mm Panavision gold's set-up to shoot from a couple of different angles.Once they began a scene and the actors were out of view they simply would track the camera to another position while the camera kept on rolling. They must have burned at least $100,000 bucks on film that day!

They also had a pretty good catering service too
